Love is A Losing Game: Amy Winehouse (1983-2011)

Like many fans around the world, HOUSE OF SASSI was sad to hear of the passing of  the extremely talented Amy Winehouse who tragically died at the weekend, aged just 27.

Amy was well-known for her troubled personal life (mostly for her battle with drugs and alcohol), but that didn’t stop her from hitting the UK music scene with a bang. In 2003, the release of her first album, Frank, led to an Ivor Novello award and several BRIT nominations. The album put Amy on the music map with songs including ‘Stronger Than Me’, which gained her a huge fan base.

Amy’s second album, Back to Black, is most famous for its controversial lead single ‘Rehab’. The album contained several songs with a much more personal vibe than Frank. Amy’s amazing talent as a singer/songwriter shone through on her second album, winning her five Grammys and tie-ing her with Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keys, for the second largest number of awards won by a female artist in a single ceremony. Fans loved the singles ‘Back to Black’, ‘Love is a Losing Game’, and ‘You Know I’m No Good’.

Amy’s unique voice, her soul/jazz-influenced music, and that trademark beehive (not to mention her colourful private life) made her a household name in the UK and beyond. Found at her home in Camden on July 23rd, Amy’s tragic death  enrols her in the iconic ’27 Club’-musicians and stars who died before or at the age of 27, and whose members include Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

The music of Amy Winehouse will live on for its uniqueness, frank honesty, and showcasing of a genuine talent. HOUSE OF SASSI will always love Amy’s hugely popular version of The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’, with Mark Ronson. RIP Amy, the UK music scene won’t be the same without you.

Young Gun Ed Sheeran Releases New Single

Let the countdown to the album launch begin….

Suffolk-born singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran’s new single ‘Young Guns’ was released on iTunes yesterday along with the opportunity for fans to pre-order his debut album. The eagerly awaited single is a collaboration with Yasmin, Lewi White, Griminal and Devlin.

Everyone at HOUSE OF SASSI is excited for the release of Ed’s album on September 12th, which people are already pre-ordering, highlighting the huge success Ed has enjoyed in recent months. His debut single ‘The A Team’ peaked at No.3 in the charts, and he has a huge list of upcoming tour and festival dates throughout the summer. Add that to a huge fan base dating back to his days as a YouTube phenomenon, and it seems that Ed’s music is really receiving the recognition it deserves.

Ed has already rocked several of the summer’s most talked about festivals, including Glastonbury, Beach Break Live, and most recently the iTunes festival, with a headline set at Latitude in Southwold later this month. Don’t worry if you’ve missed out on festival tickets, as Ed will continue to tour the UK this summer with gigs lined up all over the country in between festival appearances.

For anyone not familiar with Ed’s music, HOUSE OF SASSI recommends that you watch his YouTube acoustic sessions, filmed by SBTV, the top broadcaster for new music.  Ed’s music is a mix of acoustic folk, soul, hip hop and indie, and most songs include a freestyle rap, or a mashup (check out his own song, Wake Me Up, which he mixes with Gyptian’s Hold Yuh).

Last week, Ed’s album cover was unveiled, a pastel drawing of the singer by London based artist Philip Butah. If you’re unable to wait for the album’s release, several of Ed’s EPs, including ‘One Take’ and ‘Loose Change’, which contains ‘The A Team’ are available on iTunes. In the meantime we suggest that music lovers should check out Ed’s Youtube videos, including his fantastic SBTV performance of ‘You Need Me’.

Have a listen, and tell us what you think!

FHN: Emma Watson at the Harry Potter Premier

“Fashion Hot or Not”

Emma Watson made a magical entrance at the premier of the final Harry Potter film last night in a show-stopping LBD, a look which couldn’t have been more different from the wizard attire that fans are used to seeing her in.

Posing for photos outside the St Pancras Hotel with her co-stars, it isn’t difficult to see why the star is fast becoming a fashion icon. Emma opted for a beautiful Rafael Lopez number, an innovative take on the LBD, with lace and ruffle detailing for a stand out look. A pair of patent black heels were the perfect addition to the outfit.

HOUSE OF SASSI have rated Emma Watson’s stunning Red Carpet look  : RATING 4/5

Fashionista’s flock to Essex for Essex Fashion Week

We’ve had London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and Africa Fashion Week…  and this week fashonista’s flocked to Essex for Essex Fashion Week!

The catwalk was dominated by New Look with their new spring/summer women’s and menswear collection, which consisted of very bright colours which would look lovely at any outdoor party or event.   They also launched their ‘IDOL’ range which had a darker feel to it, with lots of sequins and short dress lines; this collection will definitely go down well with the Essex fashionistas.

OOOY (One Off, One You), showed off their collection of tailored jackets with modern twists, and Cherie’s Boutique, Sweet Boy and Masato also showcased their collections at the event.  Masato’s collection was a show of  high fashion with the cuts and styles being most on trend. The pieces were beautifully presented and we can imagine his work will soon be on the catwalks of London and Paris.  Masato’s work can be seen in the pattern cuts of established designers Giles, Kate Halfpenny and Kinder Aggugini.

The cast of The Only Way is Essex played a part in the event with Nana Pat and James ‘Arg’ Argent in the audience and Jessica Wright, Lydia Rose Bright, Candy Jacobs and Michael Woods appearing on the runway as models.

On the Saturday, the last day, other VIP members were in attendance such as David Van Day, Janice Dickinson, Mica Paris, Dane Bowers as well as other cast members from The Only Way is Essex, which ensured the three day event went off with a bang.
